The mail to news gateway could start dropping (or bouncing) messages,
instead of just marking them as spam.
On the other hand, if your news reader supports filtering messages,
you can have a virtually spam free news experience by discarding all
messages that have a subject in all caps or have been marked spam by
the mail to usenet gateway. Few spam pass through these two tests.
In Gnus this would be a score file with the following:
("^[^a-z]+$" -1000 nil R) ;; no lower-case alpha (all caps or foreign)
("*****SPAM*****" -1000))) ;; spam detected by mail to Usenet gateway
