0.5.1 won't compile

I've tried to compile scsh-0.5.1 several times and every time it fails with
this:

Error: exception
       (external-call #f)
make: *** [scsh/scsh.image] Error 1

Before it does fail, it gives a ton of warnings about 'External not found'
with names like 'df_isatty' which I suppose are the scheme versions of system
calls.

I'm running Linux 2.0.29 on a Pentium 75 with 16 megs of ram, with gcc 2.7.2,
libc 5.3.12, and make 3.74.

So.. anyway, I'm wondering what I have to do to get this thing to work..
