Uberhaught... oops, I mean Ousterhout... has explicitly invited criticism and
discussion (below). I think the scsh list could also benefit from discussion
and criticism apart from the Tcl list. A community response might be a good
idea after a couple weeks of open discussion, as

Although I have not had a chance yet to read his paper (I just printed it
out to read tonight), I look forward to reading your comments on it. John
apparently has an intentional blind spot when it comes to Scheme.

Subject: New white paper on scripting

I've just made available a draft of a white paper on scripting entitled
"Scripting: Higher-Level Programming for the 21st Century". This
document discusses the fundamental differences between scripting and
system programming and explains why scripting makes more sense than
system programming for many of the applications of the 21st century.
It also explains why object-oriented programming has failed to achieve
the reuse and productivity gains that were hoped for, and why scripting
has actually achieved those gains. You can get the white paper from
either my home page or the Tcl home page:

        http://www.sunlabs.com/people/john.ousterhout
        http://www.sunlabs.com/tcl

I'd be happy to receive comments or criticism on the white paper via
email, but discussions about the overall ideas might make more sense in
a public form like comp.lang.tcl instead of email to me.
