Hear, hear.  Another possible advantage is the Schemely style-sheet
standard :-).

I happen to have been looking around recently.  Schrod's system at
ftp://ftp.th-darmstadt.de/pub/text/sgml/stil (CLOS-based) might be a
start if anyone's enthused:

  Furthermore this distribution features an example: the
  transformation of DocBook RefEntry documents to Unix nroff man
  pages.  (The complete DocBook RefEntry DTD is not covered, this is
  an example, not a production system. But all prinicipal
  transformations have been included, the rest is pure stupid typing.)

Also there and elsewhere are the ICA tools which might help in format
conversion to/from LaTeX (I haven't tried yet) and another system in
the linuxdoc mould, `gf'.  It looks to me as though linuxdoc is the
most immediately useful tool and deserving of more attention.
