I missed the fact that things were on the branch. I moved there and
redid applied the work, it was much simpler. I also checked the time1.c
fix to mainline, since that file replaced the machine specific file on
the branch. It should all be checked in now, let me know if I broke
anything, particularly with my configure.in simplification.
