Ok, so I added install-string exactly as you suggested.

I also fixed the problems you reported (with unknown layouts and 
relative prefixes, the latter being forbidden now), and quasi-quoted 
the version number. I just committed these changes to the CVS 
repository.
I'm now trying to bring the documentation in sync with the code, and in 
the process I'm converting it to LaTeX.
