Well, I use ncftpget (Library version: LibNcFTP 3.1.3 (March 4,
2002)).  and it said:

[andreas@hgt tmp]$ ncftpget 
ftp://ftp.scsh.net/pub/scsh/0.6/scsh-0.6.6-beta.tar.gz
ncftpget: server said: Can't open "scsh-0.6.6-beta.tar.gz" for reading.

But you are right: when I create the directory layout locally, I can
"GET it directly".  Looks like ncftpget gives me a misleading error
message (?).
