I withdraw my support from requiring a "standard" directory layout. I add my support to giving the administrator the tools to install a custom directory tree and package author the tools to find resources in that custom install tree. I think we have reached a consensus. I suggest that the install script should be able to dump a file listing the customizable variables and their default values. If this configuration file exists, install should use it to provide the values. That way, while I'm developing, I can set the variables once and avoid memorizing and typing a huge set of options on the command line each time I install.
