Subject says all.  A different mechanism for checking 
passwords from
user database would also do.  This is needed for 
making the ftp daemon =

to go into SUnet more fully featured.

BTW: I consider this a feature request not a bug and it
should therefore be submitted in the "Feature Request
System" (available under "Tracker").
